It does a multiple duty of a file server for your home network. FTP, though an old system, is still a good means of copying files from one device to another. One device acts as an FTP server, while the other is FTP client.

You can install FTP server software on the system which acts as web server.

For systems acting as FTP clients, you can download FTP client software package from the internet. You can use DOS window command line built into windows.

First Click Start, then run, type cmd into the dialog box followed by typing ftp-? and the display will show different parameters from which you can specify to execute the command.

By using the appropriate commands, you can either send or receive files between computers in your home network.
  

The other method is to turn on file sharing provision in Windows XP Professional. First, double click My computer.

On the Tools menu, click Folder Options. Then click view tab, and select the use simple file sharing check box.

You should be cautious in setting the security appropriately so that the files viewed in other home network devices are prevented from being deleted or edited.

You must have Write access to transfer files to the other devices in the home network.

You can right click a folder, followed by clicking sharing and security to appropriate level.

Transferring files through email is still easiest choice.
