The technical definition and acronym for the term in indeed can be intricate, but the meaning for your networking purpose is really simple.

Protocol is a set of rules, which are adopted as standard rules for computer.


For instance, HTTP protocol is used by the internet browsers, which specifies a list of methods for transmitting data in the internet.

Similarly, TCP/IP protocol specifies how packets are transmitted on a TCP/IP based network.

There are many ways that involve protocol to establish networks. The most commonly used protocol is IBM’s SNA network philosophy.

Though it is now replaced by TCP/IP, IBM’s protocol is still in use in many parts of the world.
 


However, it is highly beneficial to know some aspects that affect your home network,  this will help you create an efficient network.

One of the main parts of the home network system is the router. The routers come in various types, each having separate protocol.

For instance, wireless router may use 802.11b or 802.11n.

Though the technical details are unimportant, it is important to know the first rated at 11MB that has a great impact on your network.

The first rated is though 11MB, the real throughput is 6 to 7MB only.
 

Hence, the real transfer rate is generally less then what you think of because of overhead when transferring files. 

As a common user of computer, you may not wish to pay attention to details of Ethernet protocol.

However, it is advisable to know the standard protocol used in Ethernet network. 802.3 is the standard protocol for Ethernet network.

If you have wired Ethernet network, then the standard protocol is10 Base - T

There are lots of new acronyms and unfamiliar protocols emerging from the computer field every week.

The computer professionals or computer experts are interested in knowing them.

As a normal computer user, it is worth the time to become familiar with some of the protocols and terms to build your network without any problem.
