Home Computer Security Threats

Nowadays, it becomes Very Easy and Inexpensive to Set up a Wireless Home Network.

But they Lack the knowledge on Guidelines Required to Secure it.

Many of them ignore the most basic guidelines. In either case, data disaster may happen, leaving the home network builder in a complicated state.

As a common person, you may doubt the security procedures for the network.

You may think that it is not certainly essential to have security. Security in fact is similar to a medical insurance policy.

You may not need a medical insurance unless and until anything goes wrong.

If you do not have it, you may suffer severely from the results.

It is therefore advisable to undergo security process in order to safeguard your network.

Today, wireless home networking is becoming more popular due to its lowered cost and flexible nature. However, wireless networks are more susceptible to security issues.

Anyone with wireless- enabled laptop can drive by your home and tap into your (less then 60 seconds) network.

If they do it for taking some bandwidths, then it does not cause any problem. In turn, if they are too clever and malicious, then they can introduce virus to your system on the home network without your knowledge.

You may think that browsing the net too has similar types of risks. Yes it may be.

But in the internet, you need to download an attachment from someone to get the viral infection.

It is easy to avoid it. However, the case of wireless home network is really troublesome, since you get infection without any action on your part.

You are more prone to virus even if you follow proper file sharing practice on the net.

You may then feel that it is better to use a cabled network. However, it is possible to get infection in cabled network also. Any frustrated employee or any other angry person may take revenge on you by infecting your computer.

It is not difficult for him to break in when you are away. The problem becomes more complicated, as it is hard to detect the infection in the initial stage itself.

It is therefore valuable to pay more attention to security guidelines, no matter whether you use wireless network or cabled one.

You need to ensure that all the computers in the network have separate passwords to access them.

It is not advisable to leave the computer unprotected even for few seconds. Any small infection can corrupt the whole system.

You can even change the password on the router. The defaults are mostly known to almost everyone who wants to implant virus on the system. Hence, changing the password can give the malicious person, a tough job.

You can monitor the activity on the network frequently. It is often useful to restrict children, friends and neighbors to use your home network.

Most of the teenagers have great skills in operating the system, but they do not have enough knowledge in protecting the home network.

If you configure the wireless routers, as per the instructions provided by the manufacturers, you are then able to prevent any unauthorized access.

Home networking is a delicate job that requires proper attention. It is worth to treat it, as if you were treating your credit cards.

You should not pass out any information to others about the network. These simple guidelines can help prevent the infections in the network.
